My experiences using a moving van rental

In September of 2005 I made my 10th move in 11 years. I had paid moving companies for seven of these moves and my employer had paid for the last three. However, I had fallen on tough times and the new job I had taken was over 1000 miles away without employee benefits. I decided that to save money I would rent a moving van and complete the move with the help of only my family. Most of my friends thought I was crazy, but when I told them I was saving over $1000 they changed their mind.

My first step in the process was accurately measuring the amount of stuff I needed to move so I could rent a van with sufficient cargo capacity. When I had done this I decided to call all of the local rental companies and compare their prices for a one way van rental. I was shocked to find that the prices varied considerably between providers, but the features remained fairly consistent. I decided to make a booking with the cheapest provider and take out an extra insurance option.

When it came to making the big move I sourced all of my packing boxes from local stores to save a little extra and bought cheap packing materials from the local 99 cent store. The van was ready when I arrived to pick it up and after providing my license and credit card I was ready to go. Moving on a budget wasn’t easy. The family provided the muscle and after packing the van we were all quite exhausted, but we had saved a lot of money. I was pleased to discover that driving a moving van is easy and was no more difficult than driving a family car. When we arrived we quickly unpacked the van and delivered it to the local depot. I urge anyone planning a move to consider renting a van or truck and doing it themselves – If I can do it anyone can!
