Moving Van Rentals
If you am moving or relocating it makes sense to do it yourself. Not only will this save you money, but it leaves you in total control of the big day. You can literally do everything, from renting the moving van through to packing your boxes. This is especially great for people who are worried that the moving company may damage their items through bad handling methods.
If you do want to move yourself it makes good sense to hire a moving van. Many rental agencies now offer moving van rentals suitable both for short and long distance moves. You can also customize your rental should you need packing materials, lifting machines and other extras. You can even hire extra help to pack your items or a driver to drive the van to your destination, although these types of extras will end up costing you more.
Driving a van is not as difficult as many people expect. It might surprise you to know that most people find it no more difficult to drive and park than a regular large family car (although reversing can cause some people problems). If you are unsure ask the rental agency for a test drive so you can make sure that you will be able to do it. Moving van rentals are available from almost every quality vehicle rental agency in your area.
My experiences using a moving van rental
In September of 2005 I made my 10th move in 11 years. I had paid moving companies for seven of these moves and my employer had paid for the last three. However, I had fallen on tough times and the new job I had taken was over 1000 miles away without employee benefits. I decided that to save money I would rent a moving van and complete the move with the help of only my family. Most of my friends thought I was crazy, but when I told them I was saving over $1000 they changed their mind.
My first step in the process was accurately measuring the amount of stuff I needed to move so I could rent a van with sufficient cargo capacity. When I had done this I decided to call all of the local rental companies and compare their prices for a one way van rental. I was shocked to find that the prices varied considerably between providers, but the features remained fairly consistent. I decided to make a booking with the cheapest provider and take out an extra insurance option.
When it came to making the big move I sourced all of my packing boxes from local stores to save a little extra and bought cheap packing materials from the local 99 cent store. The van was ready when I arrived to pick it up and after providing my license and credit card I was ready to go. Moving on a budget wasn’t easy. The family provided the muscle and after packing the van we were all quite exhausted, but we had saved a lot of money. I was pleased to discover that driving a moving van is easy and was no more difficult than driving a family car. When we arrived we quickly unpacked the van and delivered it to the local depot. I urge anyone planning a move to consider renting a van or truck and doing it themselves – If I can do it anyone can!
Should I use a moving van?
If you are moving or relocating then you have two main choices. Firstly, you can hire a moving company that will do all of the work for you. Alternatively, you can take the do-it-yourself approach and make the move yourself with a moving van rental.
Many of you might be wondering why you would want to take such a big thing as moving into your own hands when someone else can do it for you. The main advantage, of course, is price. Paying a moving company can cost a considerable amount of money, but hiring a truck or van is much cheaper and allows you to take control of the relocation. Hiring a moving van is also very easy and will be available on the day you need it (unlike some moving companies I have used in the past).
Before you make your decision it is a good idea to compare what it would cost for each and decide whether the difference in price is worth it. The disadvantages of using a van are obvious – you have to do all the packing! However, most people actually find that taking control of this helps reduce stress and worry about breakage and items getting lost.
Once you have taken some time to consider the advantages and disadvantages your decision will probably be an easy one. You can make bookings online or over the phone, but I always recommend using the Internet because you have instant access and wont have to wait on hold for someone to answer and take your order.
